How to choose fragrance as a gift

Buying a fragrance as a gift is genuinely difficult — you’re choosing something personal for someone else’s skin, often without being able to smell it first. Here’s how to improve the odds.

Start with what they already wear

The single most useful piece of information is the bottle already on their shelf. If you can photograph it, you can find its fragrance family, and from there find something in the same territory. Someone who wears Bleu de Chanel will likely enjoy other fresh woody scents; someone who wears Black Opium is telling you they like warm, sweet gourmands.

Understand the main families

  • Fresh / citrus / aquatic — clean, bright, easy to like. The safest gift if you genuinely don’t know.
  • Floral — rose, jasmine, tuberose. Broad, but a heavy white floral is a strong statement.
  • Woody — cedar, sandalwood, vetiver. Dry and grown-up; works on almost anyone.
  • Oriental / amber — vanilla, resin, spice. Warm and rich, best in cold weather.
  • Gourmand — coffee, caramel, chocolate. Divisive. Lovely if it’s their thing, overwhelming if it isn’t.

Match the season

A heavy oud in July is a difficult gift. A thin citrus in January feels like nothing. If you’re buying now, buy for the weather they’ll actually wear it in.

Play the concentration safe

If you’re unsure, an eau de parfum is the reliable middle. It has enough presence to feel like a proper gift without the intensity of a parfum, which is easy to over-apply.

Don’t over-think size

A 50ml bottle of something well chosen beats 200ml of something they’ll never finish. Nobody has ever been disappointed by a smaller bottle of the right fragrance.

The safest choices

If you truly have nothing to go on, the widely loved classics exist for a reason. Dior Sauvage, Bleu de Chanel, YSL Libre, Good Girl and La Vie Est Belle are popular because they work on a very broad range of people.

Ask us

Tell us what the person currently wears, roughly what you want to spend, and whether it’s for day or evening. We’ll suggest two or three options. That’s a normal thing to ask, and we’d rather help you get it right than process a return.
