Top, heart and base notes: how a fragrance unfolds on your skin

Read any fragrance description and you’ll meet three words: top, heart and base. They describe how a scent unfolds on skin over several hours — which is why the fragrance you smell in the first minute is not the one you’ll be wearing at dinner.

Top notes: the first ten minutes

These are the lightest, most volatile ingredients, and they evaporate fastest. Citrus, herbs, light fruit and fresh spices live here. They give a fragrance its opening burst, and they’re gone within about fifteen minutes.

This matters when you’re shopping. Buying on the first spray means buying on the part that disappears soonest.

Heart notes: the next few hours

As the top notes fade, the heart emerges — usually florals, warmer spices and softer fruit. This is the main character of the fragrance and what most people recognise it by. Give any scent twenty to thirty minutes before judging it.

Base notes: what’s left at the end of the day

The heaviest ingredients: woods, resins, musk, amber, vanilla, leather, oud. They’re barely noticeable at first but they anchor everything above them and can last eight hours or more. A fragrance with a strong base is what people mean by good longevity.

Why this changes how you should shop

Spray it and wait. A fragrance that seems too sharp at first may settle into something you love. One that opens beautifully may dry down to nothing interesting. Neither is obvious in the first minute.

It also explains why the same bottle smells different on two people. Skin chemistry, temperature and hydration all affect how quickly each layer burns off.

Reading a note pyramid properly

When a listing says top: bergamot, heart: rose, base: patchouli — it’s telling you the shape of a journey, not a list of ingredients. Look hardest at the base notes. That’s the part you’ll be wearing for most of the day, and the part other people will remember.

We publish the note breakdown on every product page where we can verify it. Where we can’t confirm it, we describe the fragrance honestly rather than inventing a pyramid.
