Sillage is the trail a fragrance leaves behind you. Projection is how far it radiates while you’re standing still. Longevity is how long it lasts on skin. These are three different things, and confusing them is why people buy the wrong bottle.
The three measurements
Projection — the radius around you where the scent is detectable. A strong projector announces you as you walk into a room.
Sillage — the scent trail left in your wake, noticed after you’ve passed. A fragrance can have modest projection but beautiful sillage.
Longevity — hours on skin. A fragrance can last twelve hours while projecting almost nothing after the first two, sitting close to the skin instead.
Why “weak” fragrances often aren’t
Some of the most admired fragrances deliberately sit close. Narciso Rodriguez For Her and most clean musks are designed as skin scents — intimate rather than announcing. People call them weak, but they’re doing exactly what they were built to do.
If you want to be noticed from across a room, buy for projection. If you want someone to notice only when they’re close, a skin scent is the right tool. Neither is better.
What drives projection
- Concentration. More oil generally means more presence — though not always, as parfums often trade projection for intimacy.
- Note choice. Ambroxan, oud, patchouli and heavy ambers project hard. Citrus and light musks don’t.
- Your skin. Oily skin holds and radiates fragrance better than dry skin. This is why the same bottle performs differently on two people.
- Temperature. Heat pushes fragrance outward, which is why summer demands restraint.
Nose blindness
After twenty minutes you largely stop smelling your own fragrance. Your brain filters it out as background. This is completely normal — and it’s the reason people over-apply. You reach for more because you can’t smell it, while everyone around you can smell it perfectly well.
Trust the first ten minutes. If it seemed right then, it’s right.
The known monsters
Some fragrances are famous for filling rooms: Creed Aventus, Spicebomb Extreme, Montale Intense Café, Mugler A*Men, Nishane extraits, Orto Parisi Megamare. With any of these, one spray. Genuinely.
Our product pages note where a fragrance projects hard, so you know before you buy rather than after.
